Our History
In December of 2012, I was invited to an annual beer exchange in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The rules were pretty simple… 40 guys each brought a case of beer. Everyone sampled and scored every beer. After the first round of scoring, the top 5 beers were sampled again, and a winner was chosen.
Despite the beer exchange’s glorious 10 year history and the organizer’s expertise with Microsoft Excel, the master scoring sheet just couldn’t be updated fast enough. It was a 2-hour wait between the first and second scoring rounds. 40 guys scoring 40 beers… that’s 1600 individual beer scores to write, collect, sort, and report. Not an easy task. (By the way, my beer came in 37th out of 40…. Boo.)
Forward to New Years Day with family and friends. Three of us were talking about how to improve the exchange over mashed potatoes and a recent home brew (a Pumpkin Ale that tasted like “Poopkin” Ale). And then those familiar words came out…. “You should write an app for that”. As a 10 year veteran of the software industry, I’ve heard those words before… but never about something that I was so passionate about. So, I tucked the idea away.
Not two weeks later, in January 2013, my friends decided we needed yet another excuse to get away from our wives. So, we created a monthly beer club. During our first meeting, we ran into the typical organizational questions: what’s the best way to track our beers, how do we score, how do we know who brings what? When someone said “Excel,” a shiver went up my spine. There had to be a better way… and Beer Club Hub was it. Beer Club Hub launched 6 months later after extensive research, development, and testing.
Beer Club Hub has pretty much the same goals as our tiny beer club. We want to enjoy beer. We want to learn about beer. And we want an excuse to get together. That’s what Beer Club Hub is all about.
