Ranking Members

As beers are scored, they are ranked by the number of points they are scored for each category. Each person who supplied the beer is also ranked by the scores their beer scores. Beers are always ranked by overall score, but Members can be ranked in a number of different ways. We give you options on how members are ranked in a Contest. You will need to choose one of these options when you create a new Contest.

Rank by Average Score

A Member's rank in the contest is determined by the average score for all of their beers. So if Joe has brought two beers that scored 7/10 and 9/10, then his rank would be based on his average score of 8/10 (or 80%). At the end, the person with the highest average score is on top. With this option, a Member who brings one beer that is ranked 9/10 will beat a Member who brings a thousand beers ranked 8/10. So this is good for those shorter Contests or Beer Exchanges where you know exactly how many beers a Member will bring.

Rank by Point System

With this system, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranked beers for each tasting will earn their supplying member a certain number of points. For example, you can choose to award the 1st place member 5 points, seconds place member 3 points, and 3rd place member 1 point. So if a Member's beers comes in 1st and then 3rd, the Member would have a total of 6 points. As the Contest goes on, the points for each member add up. At the end, the Member with the most points wins the contest. In this case, a Member who came in 2nd place two times will beat a Member who came in 1st place only once. This is good for Clubs that meet every month that might not get every Member to come out every night. It prevents "that guy" from coming to only one meeting and winning the whole contest.

Rank by Decreasing Point Scale

This is probably the most "fair" (if you even care about that sort of thing). With this system, a member gets a point for participating and a point for every beer they score better than. So, if there are 4 members participating and a member comes in 2nd place for the tasting, the would receive 3 points (1 point for participating + 2 points for besting 2 members). If a member does not particiapte in the tasting, they receive 0 points. As the Contest goes on, the points for each member add up. At the end, the Member with the most points wins the contest. This scoring system is great if you want to punish members for not participating in a tasting. You need to show up if you want to win!

Rank by Number of Wins

This one is the most straight forward. At the end of each tasting, the Member with the highest rated beer gets 1 point (a win). As the contest goes on, the points add up. At the end of the contest, Members are ranked by the number of times they have won a tasting. When using this type of ranking, a Member who wins twice will beat a Member who comes in second 8 times. So this is the way you want to go if you only care about who was on top the most.
